Secondary Education Degree Programs

A Master’s degree in Education with a specialization in Secondary Education typically prepares graduates for educator positions at the middle school and high school (grades 7-12) level. Graduates with these degrees often teach at the community college level as well.

These Master’s degrees prepare graduates interested in teaching grades 7-12 with the skills necessary to be professional educators. They are prepared as single subject teachers which is different from Elementary Education specialists.

In addition to courses designed to improve their knowledge in a subject specialty (e.g. Math, Science, Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Physical Education, Art, Music, etc.), teachers also take classes that directly applicable to the classroom. These might include courses on curriculum development, classroom management, technology for the classroom, measurement and evaluation, advanced instruction methodologies, etc.

Some Master’s degree programs in Education are designed for those who are already experienced teachers. Others are designed for students with absolutely no teaching experience. Be sure to pick the correct degree for your experience and situation.
